Jorge Perianes

Jorge Gómez Perianes (Ourense, 1974). Graduated in 2002 from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Vigo, Pontevedra campus. His PhD thesis was entitled “El surrealismo. La violencia en el erotismo y la sexualidad: la fragmentación humana”. Jorge Perianes began his exhibitive career in 1997, a part of a group show in Vigo; since then, his work has been featured in collective events across most Galician cities, Seville and Turin (Italy). In 1998, he presented his first solo exhibition, and since then has held many other individual shows across the whole of Spain. He is a recipient of a Caja Madrid arts grant, and of the VIII Mostra Unión Fenosa Prize, in A Coruña. Jorge Perianes’ artistic output, which is seen as one of the most creative and surprising among young Spanish artists, has at its core a reflection on the human condition. His works – somewhere between painting and sculpture – sometimes take on roles that are the opposite of what we are used to find in them. Thus it is not strange that among them we amusedly find a painting that demands that we look around it or that incorporates its support; or a sculpture that demands that we limit ourselves to a single point of view in order to understand it. Because these works contain allusions to oral or oneiric expressions that are materialised as art objects, our initial amusement can turn into a profound reflection.
