Pedro Cabrita Reis

Pedro Cabrita Reis was born in 1956, in Lisbon, where he currently lives and works. In 1973, he enrolled at the Fine Arts School of that city to study Painting. He had his first solo show in 1981, and has since then developed a complex body of work, defined by the use of a variety of media, ranging from drawing and painting to sculpture and installation. Employing simple and varied materials, such as wood, glass, stone, plastic or metal, and sometimes including everyday and household elements and objects, his works explore issues linked to construction methods, architecture and memory, with a particular focus on the occupation of space, be it an exhibition space or outer space. He took part in Documenta 9, Kassel (1992); in the 21st and 24th São Paulo Biennials (1994 and 1998, respectively), and in 2003 represented Portugal at the Venice Biennalle. His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in major museums and art centres in Portugal and abroad. Particularly noteworthy are the retrospective exhibition “One after another, a few silent steps”, presented at Hamburg (2009), Nimes (2010), Leuven (2011) and Lisbon, at Museu Coleção Berardo (2011), and “States of Flux – Pedro Cabrita Reis”, held at the Tate Modern, London (2011). He has also created a number of public art works, which follow the same guidelines as the rest of his work.
