Rui Sanches was born in Lisbon, in 1954. He studied at Ar.Co – Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual, Lisbon, earned a BA degree from Goldsmiths College, London (1980), an MFA from Yale University, New Haven (1982) and a PhD from Universidade do Algarve (2017). In 1984, he exhibited his work for the first time, in two locations: Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes and Galeria Diferença, in Lisbon. Since then, he has presented more than forty solo shows, including a retrospective at Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (2001), “MUSEUM” at Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (2008) and “Dentro do Desenho” at Fundação Carmona e Costa (2014). He participated in dozens of group exhibitions, in Portugal and abroad. His work is represented in every major Portuguese public collection and in several foreign collections, namely: Museu Gulbenkian (Modern collection); Museu de Serralves; Museum Van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerp; Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo, Badajoz; Fundação EDP; Fundação Luso-Americana para o Dsenvolvimento; Colecção da Caixa Geral de Depósitos; Mudas – Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Madeira; Fundação Leal Rios; Colecção Berardo and Colecção António Cachola. Several of his works adorn public spaces, namely Colunata, at the Portuguese Parliament, the monument to Maria José Nogueira Pinto in Lisbon, and sculptures in Santo Tirso, Alcobendas (Spain), São Pedro do Sul and Universidade do Algarve. In 2008, he was awarded the AICA/Ministery of Culture Prize.
