André Príncipe (Porto, 1976). Lives and works in Lisbon. Studied Psychology at the University of Porto and graduated from the Lisbon Theatre and Film School in 2001. He has travelled across North America, Europe and Asia. He lived in New York and London. His artistic practice is focused on the sequential image. His work has been regularly exhibited since 2004. His most important solo shows are: Walls, at Centro Português de Fotografia (2005); Tunnels (2005), Smell of tiger precedes tiger (2009) and Master and Everyone (2011) at Galeria Fernando Santos; I thought you knew where all of the elephants lie down, at Centro Cultural de Ílhavo (2010) and Antena 2, at Galeria Pedro Alfacinha (2014). The most important group shows to feature his work were held at: Le Bal and Galerie 12 mail, Paris; CGAC – Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea, Santiago de Compostela, Spain; CAV and Centro José Guimarães, Portugal.
He has directed and co-directed several short and long films, such as “Traces of a diary” (with Marco Martins) which received the jury’s honorary award at Documenta Madrid 2011 and was shown at various international film festivals. His latest feature, “Campo de flamingos sem flamingos” (prod. O Som e a Fúria), had its commercial premiere in 2014.
André Príncipe is the founder and co-editor of publishing house Pierre von Kleist. PVK’s books are distributed worldwide, and are regularly showcased as such events as the NY Art Book Fair, at MoMA PS1, the Tokyo Art Book Fair and Offprint Paris.
He has published six books: Tunnels, Booth-Clibborn Editions, London (2005); Master and Everyone (2010); I thought you knew where all of the elephants lie down (2011); Perfume do Boi (2012); Smell of Tiger precedes Tiger (2012); Tokyo Diaries, with Marco Martins (2014); You’re living for nothing now, Book 1, 2, 3 (2015), all published by PVK.
